Space Elevator and Timidity

Nov 08 2009

The second cadence I have listed on the homepage has been updated. Oh, and I decided to call it "Space Elevator". It might be finished, but I'm going to listen to it again in a few days and see how I feel. In the meantime, please listen to the preview below and let me know what you think.

Preview of Space Elevator:

Flash doesn't seem to be working for you.

You may remember that the software I use to create PDFs of my music (lilypond) also creates MIDI audio files. I play each MIDI file using drumline instruments with another piece of software and save the result as a wav file. I had been using Fluidsynth for this step but I recently switched to timidity, which is older and more popular.

Timidity does essentially the same thing as fluidsynth, but timidity does it faster. When fluidsynth plays a midi file, it plays the file at regular speed. Timidity sees that I'm outputting to a wav file and does the playback as fast as it can. This saves me about 30 seconds of waiting each time I want to hear what I've written.

Another pleasant surprise is timidity's output sounds like the drums are playing in a gymnasium. I think this means timidity preserves the original drum samples better than fluidsynth, which is a nice change.

Have any thoughts or suggestions?

Drumline Music

... of a special variety.

Writing drumline music makes me happy. Vacuuming comes close, but is still in second place.
