From Cars to Cadences

Jun 11 2009

I'm on the cusp of a big cross-country move, so I haven't had the time nor funds to finalize my music composition setup yet. Needless to say, I'm anxious to purchase a set of drum samples, put together my soundfont, and get composing.

A month ago I learned how to create lilypond files by hand because Denemo doesn't have an easy way to create flams, and its lilypond output files are too convoluted. It's inevitable that I'm going to have to edit lilypond files by hand and I don't want to wade through what Denemo produces. It's much easier to start from scratch and format the syntax in a sane way. I'll end up tweaking sticking, diddles, note heads, staff to MIDI instrument mappings, etc. It might be a bit more work, but at least I won't be limited by Denemo.

I've also started two new cadences, but without being able to hear them I get stuck pretty quickly. A cadence usually begins with a bit of inspiration on a melody or drum lick, but after that I have to work in smaller pieces and test each bit as I add it. I've yet to develop the ability to hear the music sufficiently in my head. Maybe it'll come more naturally one day, but for now it's like learning how to type: you can't tell if you've done a good job unless you can see the screen.
